Aya Alshahwany

Aya joined Black Burke Mayor as an associate after articling at a national public interest and consumer protection non-profit organization, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, in Ottawa. She has appeared before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology to advocate for stronger consumer rights in Canada.

Her dedication to the labour movement comes from her deep commitment to advancing human rights and public interest advocacy. She is particularly passionate about the protection of the rights of marginalized individuals in the workplace.

Aya holds both a JD and an Honours Degree in International Development and Globalization from the University of Ottawa. During law school, Aya worked as a Research Assistant at the Senate of Canada in legislative development where she supported the progression of bills including the National Strategy for Eye Care Act. She also completed a legal internship at the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and was engaged in the law school community as the Co-President of the University of Ottawa’s Association of Women and the Law.

Prior to law school, Aya worked in the federal public service in both international trade and criminal investigations policy.

In her free time, Aya can be found exploring Vancouver’s food scene, reviewing books, trying to get her cats to behave, or anxiously making her way down a mountain on skis. Aya is also a certified Lagree and Pilates teacher and has a passion for building community and connection through movement.
